Our first miracle

Dear Family and friends Last night the Bishop and Stake President came to our home and with tender hearts, informed us that Britten had been hit by a bus.  He had severe head injuries and the out look did not look good.  With many prayers and blessings last night our family has recieved our first miracle.  They did surgery and removed the bone fragments and found the there was no bleeding around or in the brain. His eyes were dialated and when they decompressed the brain, one eye focused.  There is so much swelling occuring in his brain they hope that in time his other eye will focus.  He is in a medically induced coma and on a breathing machine. He is still in very serious condition but the Doctors are encouraged from last night.  They feel that there is hope for his future.  The Church is working on our VISA's and getting us down there ASAP.  We are very encouraged with this news and know that he has great doctors taking care of him.  We appreciate your calls, texts, and prayers in Brittens behalf.  We love all of you and are so grateful to our Heavenly Father for his constant care. Love you all, Steven and Karla

  1. So glad for positive news! We are praying with so very many others. Miracles are and will continue to happen!!! Our prayers tonight include our hope that Karla and Steven get their Visas in the morning and are with Britten soon.
Most temples (if not all) are closed on Monday, but there is usually a prompt on the telephone to add Britten's name to the prayer rolls. I will be calling the Columbus Temple tomorrow morning.
We love you Britten and know that you will be better soon!

  15. I was just notified yesterday. Britt you are in our families prayers. You were one of the best seminary students. My heart is with you as I served in Sao Paulo as well. I sure appreciate you and your family. We pray for you. We know you are in the Lord's hands...he is watches over his missionaries and their families. Even though the temples throughout the world pray for the missionaries multiple times a day. You and your family will be specially prayed for in the Rexburg Temple. We love you brother.

  16. I don't know you, but heard of your Elder through a friend. I hope you don't mind if i follow your blog. My heart and prayers go out to your family. My husband suffered a severe brain injury in 2008 while at work and I want you to know miracles do happen! After major surgery he was also put in a medically induced coma that he wasn't able to come out of for 11 days. I know the waiting and not knowing is excrutiating. There is peace in our knowledge of the gospel, power in the blessings of priesthood and miracles in the exercise of faith. It was a long road, but my husband is doing amazing today and made an almost complete recovery. He is able to work and raise our growing family, you would never know he'd suffered a TBI. Hearing the stories and success from others while going through this helped me, and there were many! My prayers and thoughts are with you all and name in the temple in Idaho. Looking back, even though the trails were great this was one of the best experiences we have had because of the miracles and blessings we received. Our father in heaven knows us and has a plan.

  29. I love going back and seeing the process of Elder Schenk in this blog. Elder Schenk was a great leader and admired by all in our mission. I remember very clearly the night he was hit. I remember being on a division with one of the Elders that lived in the same apartment as Elder Schenk at the time. Having known him for most of my mission, I couldnt think of a better person to have such a thing happen to him. I remember President Moreira sharing a message with the whole mission. One of love and of concern! Anyone who knows President Moreira knows that those were not his usual messages. I remember feeling so bad and not knowing what was going on. I remember Elder Archer calling President Moreira and asking if he would like help giving Elder Schenk a blessing. I remember how our mission which I always felt was extremely united come together more so than ever! I have often felt the power of prayer in my life, but maybe never so powerfully and wonderfully. Elder Schenk was an incredible missionary. He was a great District Leader. I am so grateful to the Lord for sparing his life and for the progress he has made. Today as I told a coworker about his amazing experience, I felt that I should write some of this down. Almost 9 years later, I can recall the feeling of Why. Why Elder Schenk? Why the Lords missionaries and in this case one who was always doing what was right and who helped everyone to be better. I do not pretend to know anything more about the Lords reasons but I know that we all have our burdens to carry in this life. May the Lord continue to bless you Britten!
