A Good Day
We started this blog as a way to communicate with our family and friends and update them on Britt's condition. We now realize that we have more friends and family than we could have ever imagined. It brings tears to our eyes to read the many comments of love and support for our son. We are so grateful for your faith and prayers.
How do you define a good day? For us, it is to see any improvement in Britten's condition, even if it is small. Today was a good day.
We have met so many wonderful, caring people here in Brazil. Now we know why Elder Schenk loves serving here. We have had so much love shown to us, that it is very heart warming.
We know that everyone has struggles and trials in life. We also know that Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ love us, and hear and answers All our prayers. May we All have a good day tomorrow.
With gratitude, Steven & Karla

ReplyDeleteGrateful for good days and God's tender mercies. Your family has always been one we looked to as great examples. This past few days has proven that we are not the only ones. Your family, Britten, and the doctors continue to be in our constant prayers. We unite our prayers with thousands of others. May your family be blessed with the peace only our Savior can offer.

We are all so blessed. We are so grateful that you and Steven are being taken care off and are so loved by all the people there. We are so thankful for a loving father in heaven who is so.close to us and hears all our prayers. He knows each one of us individually. I know that. Keep trusting in the lord and know that we are. Thanks for updating. It is wonderful. Please give Britten a hug for us and you give Steven a hug for us and have him give you one from us also. We wished so much that our arms were long enough to reach all of you and squeeze tight.
ReplyDeletewith all our love, David and Mary and family.
We love you Aunt Karla and Uncle Steven. And are so glad to hear you had what you can consider a good day. We love Britten as well and are continually praying and thinking about all of you. I hope tomorrow is another good day. We love you...Heather & Josh
ReplyDeleteI heard the news last night and I wept as it hit a little close to my heart. I too have a son serving in Sao Paulo Brazil. But he is in the Interlagos Mission. I pray constantly for his safety as I am sure you have done for Elder Britten! I was glad about the blog as I got a glimpse of what you had to go through to get over there. That is and still is a concern of mine and what I would do. I don't have a passport and neither does my husband...but after reading your blog, I might need to be prepared.
ReplyDeleteMy sister went to the Draper temple today, as she was the one that alerted me to the tragic news...I asked her to put Elder Britten's name in. And I called the Portland Temple and had his name put in there.
Thank you for sharing the highs and lows...I love the out reach of people you don't even know. The people in Brazil are so genuine! I have already seen that with the phone calls I get and the help that is extended to my son.
I will continue to pray for Elder Britten and your family. I love reading about the strength and faith and miracles that have happened! Miracles are still on this earth and they happen daily!
Love,

You don't know me, I am from Brazil and I knew about Elder Britten Schenk. Is very emotional to read your words on this blog.

We are so grateful to hear that today was a good day! We continue to pray for you guys! It's amazing to hear all the love, support, and prayers for Britten, from people he has never even met! Our Heavenly Father loves us, and is there for us always. Tell Britten we love him and we are constantly praying for you all! Praying that he will continue to have good days! We love you guys!

You're all in my prayers. I can't imagine what you're going through but I do know of the special love and attendance the Lord gives His missionary sons and daughters. I pray for Elder Britten to return to his full capacity and know that our Father in Heaven is keeping close watch. May you be comforted and filled with His love.
ReplyDeleteLove you so much, Karla.

I love the advice he gives to us all......Your future is only as bright as your Faith.

We will pray from Driggs. Our oldest child and daughter just entered the MTC in Provo last week, and we have a son who will go out in about 6 months, so missionaries are tender to us. We love you.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy to hear of any improvement! Several times today I heard of "an Elder Britten Schenk" from the news and the internet and I was proud to share how truly wonderful Britten is and what an incredible Elder he has been to the Lord and what a loving and fun member of our family he is. Steven and Karla, my prayers are continually with all of you- I love you so very much! Thank you for your faith and your goodness and your love! Love, Sherilyn
ReplyDeleteSteven, I'm not sure it was very nice of you to make Sheri shed even more tears on her Birthday, but when I just got a text from her that said, "How do you know you have the best big brother in the World? When you get a Happy Birthday email from Brazil." It actually isn't surprising at all! You and Karla are both amazing. We love you and Britten so much. Our thoughts and prayers have been with you every waking moment since last Friday. It's so nice to hear that there are so many there willing to take good care of you guys. Love, Stacy and Leslie
ReplyDeleteMy Love and prayers to you and your family. I have a son in Brazil serving a mission in the londrina Mission. Elder Schenk trained our good friend Elder Cleveland. His mother informed us of the accident and gave us the blog to follow. We are praying for miracles and know that God is a God of miracles. Our son suffered a tramatic brain injury 3 years ago and I know that through the power of prayer and fasting and the love of the Lord he was healed. I will pray that you feel the love and support of so many joining you and your family in prayer on his behalf.
ReplyDeleteDear Steven, Karla and family,
ReplyDeleteWe were shocked and saddened to hear about Britt's accident. He has been in our prayers since we heard on Saturday and we also have many friends and ward members praying for him as well. His name is in the Reno Temple. I appreciate your faith and your expression of allowing the Lord's will to be done. That is a hard thing to, but the best thing. I appreciate your effort to keep us posted on the blog.
I'm glad today was a good one. even tiny improvements can mean great things.
I am amazed by the number of people who have posted thoughts here and have been touched by the situation. He is still doing missionary work as I read of individuals who are feeling the need to pray who haven't done so for a long, and my non-member friends who are being touched by the faith of your family.
Please know how much we love you.
Marilyn, Rachel and Mikey
ReplyDeleteDear Schenk Family,
ReplyDeleteYou have been in our constant thoughts and prayers from the moment we heard of Elder Schenk's injuries. Last month, we flew to our own missionary son's hospital bedside after he incurred severe injuries similar to your son's after being struck by a vehicle. The news of Elder Schenk's accident went straight to our hearts, and we fervently pray for angels to attend him that he may heal, and that his family will all be strengthened with comfort and guidance. We know that the faith and fasting and prayers of many people around the world have helped our own son in miraculous ways, and we will continue to unite our own prayers with the many who are praying for Elder Schenk and his family. May you have many more "good days", and may the blessings of heaven be poured out upon you all.
Love, Trevor and Cherie Johnson
Dear Schenk family,

I have never met Elder Schenk, but we sure love all of the missionaries that serve around here. We are praying for him.
ReplyDeleteI found out about him on facebook, where many members are publishing about him and asking other to pray for him.
When I was a missionary in DC, an Elder was hit by a Hummer, everyone was so scared, but we all prayed and after a month or so he was better and could finish his mission... I know miracles happen. the really do.

Dear Schenk Family,
ReplyDeleteOur last week has been filled with great thankfulness, heartache for your family and fervent prays for all of you. I am Elder Cole Squires' aunt and we know how easily it could have been him instead of your son. I have had such a heavy heart for you and wanted to reach out to you, so I was so glad to find this blog.
We know miracles do happen because Cole's grandmother (my sister) and I have both been blessed to live by miracles. We are praying that miracles continue to happen for Britten. We know that the Lord knows what is best for all of us.
I hope that you might get to meet Cole while you are there. I know he loves your son because of the things he says in his emails each week. I know this has truly affected him though he doesn't talk much. The mission president has been great with him so it has helped ease the worry about him.
Our family is in California though I live in Salt Lake. If there is anything I can do from here, please let me know.
May you see more good day than bad and that Britten will continue to improve. We will keep close track of Britten through this blog and through Cole's emails.
Our family will continue praying for your family. Our love and very best wishes are being sent to you.
Karla and Steven,
ReplyDeleteWhen Aline woke me up on Friday night to tell me what had happened I was in shock and I couldn’t stop thinking about you and your family. I’ve heard so many good things about Elder Schenk that it’s almost like I know him too. Aline loves your family and I totally understand why.
I pray every day for good news about Elder Schenk’s condition. I am sure that there are angels taking care of him right now and everything will be ok. How wonderful is to know that families are forever. How thankful I am to know that Heavenly Father loves us so much that he gave us the privilege to know and understand His Plan just to give us strength to go through hard times like these.
It makes me sad to know that your first visit to Brazil was under these circumstances. I pray that despite everything, and as far as the situation allows you, I hope that you can have a safe and enjoyable stay in Sao Paulo.
Love,
Barbara Vasconcelos (Aline’s friend :))
Steve and Karla,
ReplyDeleteI've been touched by your family's situation and am praying for your son. I just wanted you to know that he is in the best of care at Albert Einstein hospital. We lived in Sao Paulo for 3 years and two of our children were born in that hospital (they got better doctors and better care than any of our other 6 children born in the US). Albert Einstein attracts some of the finest doctors in the world (many trained at Harvard Med). They've also got the latest equipment. While living in Brazil I fell from a bridge headfirst and broke my neck. I was flown to Albert Einstein and had amazing care. I was at risk of quadiplegia or of dying but thanks to their good care and many miracles I was able to recover and now live an active grateful life.
When I heard about your son's accident I was concerned about his care until I read they had transferred him to Albert Einstein. Wishing you the best and will be following his progress.
Many prayers for you and your son. May the Lord comfort and watch over Elder Schenk.
ReplyDeleteSteven and Karla,
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to learn of your son's accident. My heart goes out to you and your family at this very difficult time! It was 1 year ago today that my sister was in a car accident where she sustained a very serious head injury. For a week we sat at her bed side where the doctors could only tell us that they were going to try and do every thing they could to keep her alive through the next 24 hours. Three months later she was back home with her family making an almost complete recovery. She continues to make progress every day and we are so lucky and blessed to still have her with us! I have learned that the Lord is always by our side and I know that miracles happen! I pray that you will be able to feel comfort and strength from all the prayers that are being said in your behalf including ours!
Love, The Bowles from Idaho
You don't know me. I'm a member of the Church in upstate NY. I love all missionaries. They are so very special and precious to our Heavenly Father, who is surely watching over your son. I'm offering my prayers for your son and your family. I joined the church in 1994 and have stayed in contact with "my" 4 missionaries over the years. In fact I'm going again to SLC to visit them and their families. Once more, may God be with you.
ReplyDeleteDear Steven,Karla, and family, We are so thankful you are there now with your son. We are all saddened to hear about your dear son's accident. We will not forget you and continue in prayer, fasting, and having faith. We know you will see and feel the tender mercies of our Heavenly Father and our Savior. We will remember to put Elder Schenk's name in the Oakland temple also when we visit this week. We love you all. Steven and Raquel Smith and family.
ReplyDeleteYou are all in our prayers! We are so grateful for the service your son has given and for the understanding of our Heavenly Father's great Plan that you've exhibited! We know He knows all things and trust in Him and know that you do also. Thank you for sharing on this blog. Again, you are all in our prayers!
ReplyDeleteWe are in prayer and fasting so that the Father
ReplyDeleteHeaven for strength to you to recover soon, we are
cheering for you .. Family Souza !
You are in Sao Paulo, where the best doctors of Brazil are (that is where I am from). I know they will take very good care of him. We will be praying for your son and your family!
ReplyDeleteOn Monday I received my usual missionary e-mail from our son Elder Merrill. He, too, is serving in the Brazil Sao Paulo East Mission. He said, "This week was really hard not with the work so much just with some other things that happened on the mission. But what I´ve learned is to always keep my head forward and keep my focus. Just remember this week keep the missionaries in your prayers!" Then at the end of his letter he asked me not to post on his blog that a missionary (Elder Schenk) had been hit by a bus and almost died and asked us to fast and pray for him and his family. Oh how my heart ached as I read that. Then today as I checked my e-mail I received my LDS Living newsletter that had the article about Elder Schenk--which then led me to your blog. Thank you for sharing your miracles. Although we have never met Elder Schenk or you his family, we feel a connection and bond. May you find peace and comfort as you face this difficult road ahead. Our love and prayers are with you. Evan & Coleen Merrill, Medford, OR
ReplyDeleteWe have a grandson serving in Sao Paulo Interlogos and our prayers are with you and your missionary son at this time. We hope he pulls through. May the Lord bless you all at this time and give you peace and comfort.
ReplyDeleteI hope that you can feel all of our arms around you and your family, from one MM to another we will have your son in our prayers.
ReplyDeleteI was Britten's Ward Mission Prep Teacher for a year and half..His love for the gospel shows, his love for people is heartwarming, his smile contagious and his courage is inspiring. I can't begin to describe what he has done for me in so many ways..and now I know where he gets such great traits--it's from the Schenk Family. Thank you so, so, so much for your family and the optimism through all this and your faith and patience to Heavenly Father. Unbelievable you all are. Thank and God bless you.
ReplyDeleteSteve, Karla, and family, Thank you so much for the updates. I am so glad that you are with Britten now. Britten and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

ReplyDeleteDear Schenk Family,
ReplyDeleteIt has been hard for me to write this note as I have a son that is serving right now in the Paraguay Asuncion North Mission and I think graduated with Britten the same year from Mountain Crest. My heart just sank as I read the news. My prayers have been with you as this news hits so close to home. I have cried many tears for you. I know that our Father in Heaven is watching over you at this time and pray you may feel His arms around you!!
May His spirit be with you and your son in the coming days,
Marcy Hansen
Praying for your son and your family!!!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading about your son's accident and witnessing how strong, faithful, and positive you have been during this whole process, I got the feeling that the Lord is using you as instruments to show other people how one can face adversity without losing faith or hope. You have been such a good example to so many people! I am sure your son will recover from this ordeal to finish his mission and return home to his loved ones. And I am also sure you will all emerge from this experience stronger and much closer to each other. May the prayers and love that have been poured over your family sustain you through this time of trial.
ReplyDelete- Mario Silva in São Paulo, Brazil
Schenk family,
ReplyDeleteYou and your son are in my prayers. May God be with you all at this time.
My son returned last September from the Brazil Manaus Mission. My husband and I had the privilege of flying down and spending 2 weeks with him there. It's true, the people of Brazil are amazingly faithful, caring, loving and giving.

Dear Schenk family,
ReplyDeleteReading of all the love and faith-filled prayers of the members of the Church worldwide, the tender mercies of the Lord are so evident. The Gospel is true, our Savior Jesus Christ is so very aware of Britten, He loves him and will send the Holy Ghost to strengthen and bless him as well as all of you. My son, Brian, served with Britten on the youth city council and got to know Britten so well. Brian just returned from serving his mission four short weeks ago and during those two years I truly came to know of the Lord's hand throughout the world.
Our hearts are so heavy to know of your sorrow and strain. Please let our prayers and faith buoy you up and strengthen and heal ALL of you! Dransfield family
We are the parents of Elder Mielke who is currently serving with Elder Schenk. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your precious son, and hope for many many more good days to come.

We would like to echo so many of the other people who have commented thus far. Our family is continuously praying, and will be fasting this Sunday, for Elder Schenk, your family, his fellow missionaries and medical team.
ReplyDeleteMay you continue to feel the love our Father in Heaven and Savior Jesus Christ has for you all.
Much love to you.

We live in NW Montana - saw the article in the Deseret News online. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your son. In 3 weeks we had 2 major brain traumas in our Stake - both young people. One fell over a roadside cliff when stopped for a rest on the way to Conference and the other, a BYU student hit by a truck as she rode her bike in Provo. We read the blogs each night before we go to bed, anxious to hear of progress for everyone. May your son continue to heal and progress. We will be following along. Thank you for keeping us informed. For the parents of the student (they are in our Ward) it has been a long journey but things are improving - on day 96 right now.
ReplyDeleteYou are all in our prayers! Loral & Leslie Godfrey
ReplyDeleteSteve and Karla just heard about the awful news about Britten. Can't believe it. But wow it's amazing how fast you were able to get to Brazil. That is a miracle in and of itself. We are praying for him too. Prayer is the one thing everyone can do and then we have to leave it in the hands of the Lord. We love you guys and think of you. We pray for Britten that he will have a speedy recovery and that all goes well. May there be many more miracles come your way. We love you. Nelson and Tammy

Your family has been in our thoughts and prayers. Our daughter, Stephanie, graduated from Mtn. Crest with Britten and she thinks the world of him. Our other daughter, Kellie, is friends with Canon. Your family is special and many here in Cache Valley have you in their constant thoughts and prayers. May you feel comfort and peace as you travel this journey. Thank you for the great examples from your family. We also are looking forward to more good news.

Would also like to add my love to this long list, dear Steven, Karla and Britten. You are all constantly in my prayers and in the prayers of my family members. We love you, hope for Britten's complete recovery, and are inspired by your blog entries to be more faith-filled and valiant in our own lives.

Dear family! I´m Edilia Dartora and I´m living in the South of Brasil, but I used to live in São Paulo East. We called Curitiba Temple and put Elder Schenk´s name in there. I know the Lord knows where each of us are, and He knows us by name. I know He is taking care of Elder Schenk and of you too. With all our love. Dartora family, (Gery, Edilia, Israel e Nephi)
