Kind Mercies

Today has been an emotional day, full of ups and downs. We feel like we witnessed another miracle. Pres. and Sister Moreira and Elder and Sister Call picked us up today from the airport and took us to the mission home. They expressed their profound love for Elder Schenk. Then we received the update on Britten's condition. Yesterday when Britt was transferred to the new hospital, the Neurosurgeon team took over. Britten was not doing well and things did not look good. After shedding many tears we went to the hospital to see our missionary. We said to each other, that we can accept the Lord,s will, but we will keep praying for miracles. It was so good to see and hold our son. We talked to him and told him of all the love, prayers and support. The doctor then came and talked with us. He said that his condition today was so much better than yesterday. He is still in very serious condition but gave us some hope. The next few days help us know more about his injurys. They have taken him off the sedation, but still has the ventilator. We are so thankful for the overwhelming love, support and prayers that we feel from so many. Britten has touched so many lives! We thank our Heavenly Father for his kind mercies.

  4. I am truly sorry to hear of this trial that you are going through. I served in the Brazil Joao Pessoa Mission and I have an idea of what you might be thinking...only a tiny bit of understanding. One of my friends from Brazil shared this blog and I read it and decided to share as well being that the more prayers made the better. However, I just discovered that my wife knows Britten. When I shared this blog I never realized how close this would've hit home for me. Our prayers are with you. My wife is Whitney (Bean) Teig...We hope for a speedy and great recovery! May the Lord bless you at this special time in need! Your brother in the Gospel, Jason Teig

  12. I am so sorry that you and your family are undergoing this difficult trial. Your missionary sounds like a wonderful young man. Many miracles have happened and I'm sure many more are on their way. This story is close to our hearts, as we have sent missionaries in the field and are sending our youngest to Brazil in a month. I know that most people feel your pain also. Our family will be praying for you and your family and of course for Elder Schenk.

I am from Idaho Falls and i heard about Elder Britten on the news tonight. I havent prayed a whole lot lately but I will tonight, for Elder Britten and your family. My uncle was hit by a cement truck on his mission before I was born. I have heard about what it was like for my family when it happened and I know it must be so difficult. BUT miracles happen, and God will perform his will and whatever happens there are so many out there hoping for the best. Lots of love and prayers coming your way!

  27. Steve & Karla,
So glad you arrived safely and are with Britten now. He will feel of your presence and gain strength.

Elder Schenk has been a great missionary example for the Lord, and the Lord is so keenly mindful of Britten's condition as well as the state of your hopes and desires. Believe in the impossible and let the Lord do the rest. The Power is there to heal Britten.

Sometimes you have to "blind" yourself to the reality of the seriousness of the situation, and move forward believing in what your heart and the Spirit are telling you. Always trust how you feel -- and know that the Lord LOVES you and will carry you through this challenge.

Know that we love you and that you are in our prayers.

Our faith and prayers join all those from all over the world in behalf of your family.
I sadly shared the news with Jordan in my email this week, and his response was that President Yost had already told Jordan and Alex Harrison. Those missionaries joined together in fasting for their friend and fellow missionary from the MTC.

It is a great facility and it really is the best hospital in Brazil. If it weren't for all the Portuguese signs I would have thought I was back in the US. This Elder really is in the best hands the country has to offer. We hope and pray for the best and too recognize our Father's great plan for us (even if we don't have his perspective yet).

I also remember feeling a peace that everything would be okay. I'm sure that with all the prayers being said on Britten's behalf that there is no doubt your family will receive the things the Lord knows that you need. Britten is such a great young man. We have so enjoyed hearing his great testimony every week. I've never seen anyone with such a great attitude as Britten's.

  79. Dear Schenk Family,

Even though I don't know your family, my heart goes out to you. Our missionary, Elder Matthew Knoop, served in the Brazil Salvador mission four years ago. He and his companion were hit by a car as they walked home after church. Much to our heartbreak, our Elder Knoop was called home by his Heavenly Father to serve beyond the veil. May our Heavenly Father bless you with peace and love and the knowledge that He sees a bigger picture than we do and He will make the final decision on what is best for Elder Schenk. We have learned to accept the Lord's will and to have faith in Him and His plans for His children, although it has been very difficult. We love the missionaries and will remember your son and your family in our prayers. May God bless you.

    1. Oh my word...after reading this blog and now your comment, I am a blubbering baby. Thank you so much for your amazing testimony and beautiful outlook on life and our Heavenly Father's plan. My father passed away 3 years ago, not a member of the church (I'm a convert, and the only member in my family), and I am so comforted by the fact that I know missionaries are there teaching him the truth and how to have his family forever...maybe your son is one of them :)

    2. I absolutely know there is a great work going on beyond the veil and I know that our Matthew is still a missionary, only he was transferred to the spirit world. I hope he will come in contact with your father and be able to teach him the gospel. The only comfort in these difficult times is the knowledge of the plan of salvation and that we will be with our family members again. We miss Matt's physical presence every minute of every day, but we try to remember that our separation is only temporary.
God bless the missionaries wherever they are.

The gospel of Jesus Christ joins us all together in one common bond and I am amazed and thrilled to hear the love pouring from all sides of the world for Britten. Hang in there Karla and Steve and family. Our Lord and Savior is on your side and is very much aware of your situation. Prayers and the Priesthood are marvelous gifts from God and they will sustain you through this situation. Love from Eric and Carol Ruud and family.

  87. Dear Schenk Family,

Although I don't know you personally, I just wanted to take a moment to tell you that the prayers of my entire family are with you and your family. My dad is a Mission President currently in Asia and when I told him about your son he immediately called each of his missionaries to ask them to pray for him. Your faith is absolutely amazing and such a great example to all those who will visit this blog. Thank You for allowing your son to serve a mission, and we pray that he will be able to return home healthy and strong very soon!

  88. I have not met Elder Schenk, but I saw a request for prayers on Facebook. I pray with all my heart and with all my faith to the Heavenly Father's will be done, there can be a big recovery in 2006 my mother had an accident, was hit, also had head trauma and was in a coma, but I could feel the consolation of the holy spirit, and today she is recovered and teaching me so much about everything, I saw this miracle in the life of the person you love most, and I know that Heavenly Father will comfort your hearts through faith, being realizadoos see many miracles since the time that Christ came to earth as man to this day, know that the brothers help us much in prayer, and I will do my part too, with love, Jacqueline Heidk

  89. Our son Jeremy Leavitt served in the SP East Brazil Mission from 1999-2001 and we had the blessing of picking him up in October 2001. His first president was Walker and then Marques, whom we met when we were there. They were both great mission presidents and we knew of their love for our son and the missionaries in their charge. It was wonderful for me as I had served in Portugal on my mission and had 10 Brazilian companions and even got to see 4 or 5 of them when we visited. I love the Brazilians and know that they will give the utmost of care to Elder Schenk. We will be praying for his speedy recover and return to his family in Utah.

    Love,

    Jeff Leavitt and family

When you hear of tragedy such as this, it is amazing how instantly you become humble and selfless, just as the savior has asked us to be always. Our family is praying furiously for you all. We miss and love you, and know that Britton is in the Lords hands now. Hang in there, take one day at a time, and know you have more support holding you up than you can ever imagine.

  97. Elder Schenk is a wonderful missionary. I had the opportunity to be one of his teachers in the MTC. He is always so focused on helping other come closer to Christ and he has an ability to express love that anyone who talks to him would recognize him as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Elder Schenk and his family are in our prayers here at the MTC. We love him and are so grateful for the wonderful work he has done in serving the Lord these past 21 months.

  114. As my wife and I sat down to watch Mormon Times, we were deeply touched by Elder Shenk's story. Tears rolled down our cheeks as we felt the spirit of the Lord taking care of Britten's health. We lived in São Paulo for 4 years and are very familiar with the streets there.
Elder Britten, desejamos a voce toda a felicidade do mundo e oramos para que voce possa se recuperar totalmente o mais rapido possivel. Somos brasileiros residentes em Utah ha mais de doze anos.
